Stretch Marks - Even the Name Sounds Ugly

By Robert Smith

I don't think I know one person who likes stretch marks. Even the least vain person on earth wouldn't wish to have them. Nevertheless, you have them. And if you don't you will! Why do we get these marks?

You have three layers of skin on your body: The epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis. I know this isn't physiology class, but you need to know this. Even though you see stretch marks on the top layer of your skin, the stretching occurs underneath in the middle, dermis layer of your skin. The middle layer, the dermis, is where the collagen and elasticity are & where the stretching takes place.

The tears in your dermis are really marks of inequality of your dermis. This uneven look actually doesn't hurt much, but it does look bad. Remember, these are not scars on the epidermis layer. Scars are made of fibrotic tissue which is simply not present in stretch marks.

The dermis is elastic. These special fibers are what allow your skin to stretch. Rapid growth can weaken your skin's elasticity and can break the fibers that hold it together. The stretch marks occur when the skin grows faster than these elastic fibers can handle.

Poor diet and improper nutrition also hurts the body and can actually cause stretch marks too! Even smoking can weaken the ability for the skin to stretch. Alone, these factors don't usually cause stretch marks unless you have some body growth to go along with it.

Stretch marks are very common problems associated with pregnancy because this is a period of rapid growth for women. Any period of rapid weight gain will most likely be accompanied by stretch marks and they are common factors in obesity. However, it is possible for heredity to be a factor as some people have proven more prone to stretch marks than others.

What the stretch marks look like have more to do with how recent you got them rather than where they are on your body. If they are red and purple, it is early in the stretch mark process. If they are white or lighter than your skin, then it is usually the later stages of those initial marks.

If you don't like pain, don't worry. Stretch marks at any age do not hurt. We get them after we lose our baby fat, or enter or leave puberty. If you can keep a healthy diet, it will help you not have these weight swings, which will help your cause as well. Good luck!! - 30516
