Questions Before a Facelift - Look Here

By D.J. Verret, MD

Facelift surgery helps to correct some of the signs of aging which show in the face including formation of jowls and facial wrinkles. For as many people as have undergone facelift surgery, there are as many concerns about the procedure. Many rumors and questions surround the procedure - some are true, some are not.

A facelift is a painful surgery. False. The procedure itself is always done with some type of anesthesia. This can range from local anesthesia where the person is awake and the injections can be felt to general anesthesia where the person is completely asleep. Some facelift techniques can also be done with sedation, or twilight, anesthesia. This gives the best of both worlds - a lack of recall but not having some of the more common side effects of general anesthetics.

Unfortunately the media has paid a great deal of attention to celebrities who have undergone facelift surgery with less than satisfactory results showing a pulled or 'wind-blown' look. This is the exception rather than the rule. In the hands of a qualified and experienced surgeon, facelift surgery produces natural results. You can walk by a patient who has had a facelift and will not likely know that they have had anything done.

I don't want to be put to sleep. While a common concern, current general anesthesia techniques are quite safe for patients without significant medical illnesses. If this is a significant concern, talk with your surgeon about alternatives to general anesthesia. There are many options available and different facelift techniques for these options. While not a possibility for everyone, some facelift techniques can even be done with just local anesthesia.

As with any surgical procedure, consultation with a qualified and experienced surgeon is the first step toward making a decision. It is important to research the credential of the person with whom you are trusting your face. Sit down and talk with the surgeon about your concerns, expectations, and questions. Make sure that the risks and expected results are clearly explained. While there are no guarantees with medical procedures, having a clear picture of what to expect is critical in ensuring that you get the best results possible. - 30516
