Basic Risks of Plastic Surgery

By Jack Walsh

Relative to other plastic surgery procedures, liposuction is among the safest and most popular. The most common side effects are mild and temporary and serious risks are very rare occurrences. A good surgeon will practice proper preparatory as well as post-surgery procedures to ensure minimal problems during recovery.

The most common problems associated with any plastic surgery procedure is due to improper clean up after the surgery. Liposuction in particular notoriously causes a lot of fluid loss and proper drainage can prevent many of the common problems that occur during healing.

There are new liposuction techniques that have been developed and are further being improved every day to minimize the effects of any complication. Still there is no way to completely eliminate all risks. The common side effects are still potential problems.

Hematomas and seromas are one of the most common issues after liposuction. It can last for several months depending on the severity of the condition. This is when the treated area shows discolored spots due to blood pooling under the skin and can be minimized or prevented completely with proper clean up and drainage after surgery.

Surgical risks and anesthesia risks have the potential to be serious in rare cases. Major liposuction treatment is still a physically forceful procedure in some situations and can leave the surrounding tissue harmed. Internal organ damage is a possibility but the most common is excessive blood loss from damaged blood vessels.

A certified anesthesiologist is required to administer the anesthetic solution to ensure proper dosage. Some risks include allergic reactions to the drug can range from mild to serious complications. Patients are also advised to avoid any epinephrine-like drug that might elevate heart rate since the anesthesia could magnify the effect.

Understanding the risks of plastic surgery is the first step to a safe and enjoyable experience. Never bargain when it comes to shopping for a surgeon and that means that a low priced solution must not compromise the integrity of the surgeon and his qualifications. - 30516
