Is it Normal for a Man to Get a Tummy Tuck?

By Wayne Fulton

It seems that when the subject of tummy tucks come up, most people immediately imagine a woman coming out of a cosmetic surgeons office. However, reality is very different. Therefore, this article is going to focus on male tummy tucks.

For logical reasons, women are often the ones who need tummy tucks. This is of course due to women who have children. Since pregnancy often results in abdominal laxity and weakened abdominal muscles, women often need to surgery to tighten their abdominals back up.

While women do make up the majority of the tummy tuck patients, more men than ever have had this surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in 2007, there were 5,600 men who had a tummy tuck.

This of course begs the question, Why would a man need a tummy tuck? There are two answers to this question. The majority of men have tummy tucks to undo the ravages of extreme weight loss or to reverse the aging process.

Obviously, if a man loses a large amount of weight (just picture the Biggest Loser winners), he would definitely need a tummy tuck. Otherwise, he would have pounds and pounds of sagging excess skin to tow around.

The second reason, aging, isn't nearly as obvious. As we all continue to get older, gravity pulls on our body more and more. Despite our best efforts, we all seem to develop excess hanging skin in our abdominal areas. Usually, the only remedy is to get a tummy tuck.

Now that you know why a man would get a tummy tuck, another consideration for him is how he plans to pay for the surgery. Since the surgery can cost in excess of $9000, most men simply do not have this much lying around. As a result, many surgeons offer financing options to their patients.

In summary, a man who is considering a tummy tuck should not feel ashamed. In fact, with the increasing emphasis on a mans appearance, we believe that more and more men will undergo this surgical procedure. Without a tummy tuck, those men who are fighting the effects of aging or weight loss, simply will not look as good as they possibly can. - 30516
