What Does Breast Augmentation Mean?

By Terry Colvert

Study of the adjustment of a breast or pair of breast is called as Breast augmentation. It helps to improve the appearance or modifying the visual personality of the breast.

As we all know it is commonly called as "boob-job". The clinical term for a breast implant is mammaplasty enlargement, augmentation mammaplasty.

Rebuilding the breast after a mastectomy or correcting the breast generally known as congenital chest wall deformities are the reasons for breast augmentation.

There are two common substances that most implants are made from. These are saline or saltwater-filled and those made of silicone gel. The kind filled with saline were first made in 1964 in France by the Arion company. It was made with an outer wall of silicone rubber. These type of implants are inserted into the breast by making a small hole into the tissue, placing the empty implant inside and then filling it with salt water to the intended size

These saline type implants were used in the U.S. up until the 1990s because of restrictions to using the silicone type of implants. Some people consider the silicone type to be better and more natural looking than the saline type. Either can give good results, but the silicone type are thought to wrinkle less and feel more real when the breast is touched.

The modern history of breast implants begins in 1962, with a silicone implant procedure. For the first time in the history of breast implants a silicone envelope filled with silicone gel was used in a breast augmentation by the Dow Corning Corporation. They are to this day balancing aesthetics with safety.

Whether or not someone considers getting breast implants is a very personal decision that should be considered carefully. There are many specialists in the breast augmentation field that a woman can speak with and get a consultation. She should have all her questions ready to bring up to the doctor and expect the entire procedure to be thoroughly discussed prior to getting it done. This will give her the right to make her own decision after getting all the facts ahead of time and therefore make her more sure of whether or not she wishes to have it done.

Deciding on breast implant operation is a very personal decision, and one not to be made casually or lightly. Finding the right operation, and having it performed by the right surgeon, is key to increasing the likelihood of a long lasting and great result. Making the decision to have an augmentation should be well thought out by the women..And mind you it does not come cheap. - 30516
